Just to clarify, of course I'm not quitting Genma Visage. Suffice to say though, even though production of new pages has been well, quite productive, maintaining a steady update rate has always been the biggest challenge. But the thing is main reason it has been hard to maintain an update rate in that aspect is down to my primary focus these days being on Independent and Underground comics. Initially i didn't quite consider this a problem as the idea was to have a webcomic and a project running alongside simultaneously, with Webcomic adaptions having vast expansions in print compared to their online versions (to give you a rough idea, Book 2 which is 23 pages long is standing at over 50 in print).
Asides from obvious real life needs, to give you a rough idea at the moment of time restraints, I have 5 or 6 books trying to get out of the door at the same time. Although 3 of these will be out by May, you get the idea. The temptation is there to forego Webcomics altogether and focus on print, or E-books in this day and age. Yet when it comes back to getting out there for newcomers of the comic scene, i do get pushed back to the advantages of webcomics
On top of this though, is it an esteem issue I'm bringing up here? More of a lack of faith and a yearning to use time and production efficiently. I don't always have much faith in the Webcomic scene. When you look at what is popular there and "selling", I can't see those peeps buying into my kind of work, which i think seems to be the antithesis of the love for geek culture, toilet and absurdist humour, anime ecchi which is so popular.
Coming to advertising, a weakness of mine i will admit, because much of my focus is on making sure my art and shit is 300% trying to be the best shit around before advertising. The main reason I haven't focused on advertising so much, is in order to do it effectively you have to know who your target audience is, and i actually don't know who mine is. I like to think Genma Visage is Action Horror with gore, heavy metal, and a pair of tits for each book. But still i think what i do is more Underground in nature and has more in common with Robert Crumb than i do with my regular heroes. To be honest, I think there's a general sense of kissing up to Mass media that embodies the minds of many people in the small press scene or wannabe cartoonists and writers in particular, at least a lenience on other creator's audiences. Whereas with my work (still hugely influenced by mass media, mind) it seems not afraid to ask certain questions, or to say that Pop and Geek culture can work against itself or that I like to say things regardless if people agree. To this extent, I'll probably always feel alienated from the US and Japanese influences that dominate the comic scene in terms of creating new stuff. Besides, i like making my own monsters up, "hyper monsters" as they've been coined. Why have all that when you can have Zombies, Lovecraft wannabees and Grimm fairy tale adaptations?
So anyway that's my dilemma, and don't take the above paragraph too literally. In my heart i wanna continue GV as a webcomic AND print. People will just have to put up with my methods, if not the content i'm actually offering. If all else fails, and Genma does get taken down, something else will probably fill the void.
Opinions welcome though.
